NWASA Monthly Meeting Minutes
08/09/11
There
was a big turnout for the August 9th meeting. The minutes from
the last meeting were read and the treasury report was given.
There was an update on the signs our club is purchasing for posting at
all boat ramps. They are on back order. They have been
approved by the Army Corp and the AGFC.
A report on the July Fun Day was given, as well as current reports on fishing. We voted to delay our August
Fun Day and have it in conjunction with the Oklahoma Striped Bass
Association on the evenings of the 19th and/or the 20th. We will launch from Lost Bridge NORTH. All participants from NWASA are urged to call Brian at 479-216-4182
to coordinate a time when we can meet up with OSBA members. So
far, only 3 boats from OSBA and 3 from NWASA are committed to attend.
It would be nice to meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at Lost Bridge North for dinner with them.
Our guest speaker was Martin Schoenecker. He gave a very good and detailed presentation about trolling umbrella rigs.
He uses them in all seasons and has had very good success---even this
Summer when bait fishermen had little luck. He also makes them
himself and uses real deer tail fur on the jigs instead of synthetic
material that does not work as well. He has them for sale at the
meetings and local tackle shops. They are made in the U.S.A.---not China!
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. As usual, a few members stayed to trade fishing secrets.

Presentation - Technique
Terry Tromburg gave as awesome presentation on using artificials and downrigging.
Terry’s philosophy on downrigging w/ artificials: you will lose some expensive lures to snags but you don’t have the expense and hassle of finding, catching, and keeping shad.
Pics he had convinced me that he knows what he’s talking about…and it works for big fish!
Here’s a few notes I took:
Trolling speed should be 2.3 - 2.5 mph when using downriggers (~1.5 mph in winter)
Use 4# ball for under 30’ and 8# ball for 30’+
Terry’s favorites: Scotty releases, 30lb Berkley Big Game line, 7’ M Berkley Big Game rod.
Try different length stick baits because…you never know…and use dark colors at night
Terry likes to replace stock hooks w/ Owner hooks.
Set back riggers deeper than front
Set back lines at 80’-100’ behind ball
Set front lines at 30’-40’ behind ball
So get out and get down like Terry…and oh ya…watch those turns
Fun Day
Next fun day held at Lost Bridge South on Monday 6/20.
Food will be served at 6:00 pm and fish afterwards.
Misc
Jeff Wolfe will be the guest speaker at the next mtg on 7/12.
War Eagle Baits (3 mi South of Huntsville) carry large brooder minnows at times. Call 479-232-5749 to check on current stock.

Fun Days
Next fun day is Monday 4/18.
Launch wherever and meet at
We decided to schedule future fun days the Monday after each monthly meeting. May 16 will be the next fun day.
MARCH 2011 MINUTES:
We had a good turnout for our March 8th meeting. We even welcomed 3 new members: Marvin Farwell, Lynn Cress, and Gary Sanders. Our treasury report was given and the minutes from the February meeting were read. It was announced that our March FUN DAY would start at 6 a.m. at the Highway 12 ramp. Our APRIL FUN DAY will be Monday, April 18th.
We were reminded that all attendees of our meetings get a free raffle ticket for the cash drawing at the end of the meeting. All attendees of our FUN DAYS also go on a list to be turned in at the end of the year for the YEAR END DINNER PARTY CASH DRAWING.
There was a discussion on the need to post signs at all the boat ramps noting striped bass identification, and limit and length regulations. This will be a topic to pursue at our April meeting. There was also a discussion concerning solicitation of sponsors for our website, such as boat dealerships, tackle stores and similar retail outlets. Members pledged to return with some concrete ideas at our April meeting. We will charge $50 per sponsor to advertise on our site in return for an annual membership. We will require a link to our site on their advertising website.
There was more discussion concerning the advantages of using "striper tubes" which a member vowed to purchase and bring to a meeting for viewing. We also had a demonstration by 2 members about different methods of throwing a cast net for live bait. At our next meeting, we will continue the demonstration and we will also demonstrate how to crimp on hooks to leader line, and have a general discussion on terminal tackle.
FEBRUARY 2011 Minutes:
We had a smaller than expected turnout for our February 8th meeting.
Hal Johnson, outgoing 2010 President, conducted the first segment of the meeting
which included minutes from the January meeting, the Treasury report, and elections
of the 4 officers and the 2 open positions on the Board of Directors.
The results of the elections are:
President: Brian Heitzman
Vice-President: Randy Allen
Treasurer: Gene Engle
Secretary: Tim Brown
Board of Directors:
Mike Bailey, Kenn Smith ( both in their 2nd year )
Hal Johnson, Rich Sheeley ( both new )
There was a rousing discussion of several topics for the next hour.
These included fishing reports, bait fish reports, terminal tackle, changes
in the NWASA website, and our goals for the coming year.
We decided to have MONTHLY FUN DAYS instead of tournaments.
This means that members go out in their boats and try to locate fish, then call other
members to relay the information. That way, everyone learns where the fish are and how to catch them. We decided that we do not want to be a competitive club at this point. If anyone wants to bring a friend along, that is fine because he or she may decide to become a member.
Our first scheduled outing is MARCH 12th, the 2nd Saturday of the month.
We will of course have our monthly meeting on the Tuesday before to discuss time of launching etc. We decided to launch out of the Hwy. 12 Bridge ramp.
We are suggesting a catch and release method whenever possible.
Thank you,
Brian Heitzman
NOVEMBER 2010 Minutes:
We had a good turnout for the 6:30 p.m.
meeting at Beaver Lake Aviation, on Hwy.
62 on November 9th. Chad McPherson is
now in charge of the Springdale High
based "Hooked On Fishing--Not On Drugs"
annual Fun Day. Contact Mike Bailey if
you can captain your boat and show some
teenagers a good time.
The Treasury report stands at $756. in
funds. We will have a Tournement on December
11th on Beaver Lake. Kenn Smith will
host the event which will convene at the
Prairie Creek Boat Ramp at 6 a.m. See
him there before 6 a.m. for the sign-in.
The event will last until noon. It will
be a ONE fish tourney with 100% payout
on the $10 per boat entry fee. The
weigh-in will be at noon at the ramp.
Our annual Christmas/year end Party will
be held at the Corona Restaurant at
Prairie Creek at 6 p.m. on December
14th. Members in good standing and their
spouses are invited to attend. Their
dinners will be paid for with our club's
funds. Please try to attend as we will
also be electing officers of the club
for 2011. We will have some fun! See you
there.
Brian Heitzman, NWASC Secretary
OCTOBER 2010 Minutes:
October 12th We had a good turnout for the 6:30 p.m. meeting
at Beaver Lake Aviation, on Hwy. 62, on October 12th.
There was an informative discussion on keeping live bait alive.
We also mentioned the upcoming elections. Let us all think of
who we would like to nominate for the officers. Elections will
be held at the December meeting. We are going to have a
Christmas party at the December meeting. We will be discussing
that topic and a possible "Fun Day" at the November 9th meeting.
Our club is not sure if we are going to participate in the
November 23d "Hooked On Fishing" annual event this year.
We have not heard back from Ron Duncan concerning the matter.
Let us all mark our calenders and be sure to attend the next two
very important meetings. See you there!
SEPTEMBER 2010 Minutes:
There was a large turn out for the September 14th meeting at 6:30 p.m. We
even added a new member, Tim Brown, to our club. The treasury report was not
updated so the July balance stands at $756. in funds. Several topics were
discussed, including the Thanksgiving week's annual Hooked On Fishing Day,
which the club needs volunteers for. We also had a fishing report from several
members, including types of tackle and different methods used. The Twilight
Walk in historic downtown Rogers, has not been successful for the club, so the
volunteers said that they would not have a booth there Friday the 17th, which is
the last Walk of the year. It was mentioned that we should have a booth at
the next fishing tackle show, though the one at the Hammonds Center is expensive.
The Frisco Station is another venue that the club will need to consider. We could
use more members and more public awareness. At our next meeting on
October 12th, members will discuss possible outings for the club.
AUGUST 2010 Meeting:
Ron Moore, fishery biologist with the Game and Fish Commission, gave a report that 207,000 striped bass fingerlings and 60,000 hybrid striped bass fingerlings have been released into Beaver Lake. Ron also led a discussion that was originally brought up by the Norfolk Lake Club regarding culling. It was proposed that there be an official NO CULLING RULE from mid-July to mid-September. It is so hot those months that any released striped bass or hybrid would almost surely die. Once the limit is caught, fishing is over. It is something that Ron would like us as a club to consider and give him a response. All attendees voiced approval of the potential ruling. Ron also voiced his concerns with releasing fish after puncturing the bladder. He said that it would probably die anyway, so that it is not beneficial. Ron told us that there will be no regulation in 2011 against transporting live bait to Beaver Lake from another body of water. However, he stated that it probably will become a rule in the near future so as to avoid problems with Zebra Mussels, VHS, and other diseases that some lakes have.
The meeting lasted from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m.
JULY 2010 Meeting:
Gene gave the treasury report and the club currently has $756 in funds.
The Twilight Booth for NWASA was not set up last month due to the excessive heat.
We hosted speakers from the Coast Guard Auxillary who gave a presentation on
boat safety and requirements for boats on the water.
